Just wondering if anyone knows if Fischer used descriptive notation exclusively or if he used both?
He used descriptive only.

Descriptive?
FIDE started requiring Standard Algebraic Notation on July 1, 1997.
The USCF is different:
"5A. Manner of keeping score. In the course of play each player is required to record the game (both the player’s and the opponent’s moves), move after move, as clearly and legibly as possible, on the scoresheet prescribed for the competition. Algebraic notation is standard, but descriptive or computer notation is permitted. The player must first make the move, and then record it on the scoresheet. The scoresheet shall be visible to the arbiter (tournament directors) and the opponent throughout the game."
I know the UK, France, Italy and Spain all used Descriptive notation at one time. Other countries such as Russia, Germany and Denmark always used Algebraic (in fact in the 19th century, Algebraic was commonly called "German Notation"), which is why Fischer by necessity would have had to have been fluent in that notation.
I've seen a few copies of Fischer's score sheets and they were all in DN. I do not believe he ever recorded a game in AN.
To answer post #4, I only record my games in DN--I have never recorded a tournament game in AN. I still prefer books in DN, and that saves me a lot of money with people who refuse to read DN books and sell them for a song or give them away. Believe me, I really appreciate it.
