Where is Bobby Fischer? I remember when his tourney with Spassky "ruled the airways" of channel 13. It WAS a major heyday for chess!
Fischer is in Iceland, who, with good memories of what the 1972 Reykjavic World Championship match against Spassky did for Iceland, graciously extended him sanctuary after he had made himself "persona non grata" to most of the world. He is subject to arrest if he sets foot in the United States because he violated sanctions imposed by the US against Yugoslavia under former dictator Slobadan Milosevic; Fischer did this by playing in the million-dollar "rematch" against Boris Spassky staged in Belgrade under auspices of Milosevic. That is the reason for his "exile" from the US. He was in Japan for some time, but that host country tired of his antics and expelled him. He is living with a Japanese woman who became his "manager" while he was in Japan.

i recently read an article about nigel short playing bobby fischer online in 2001. short claims that he is 99.9% sure it was fischer, though the mysterious player never gave his name. has anyone heard more or does anyone know more about this online encounter? does short still believe it was fischer to this day?
