GM gives up immediately against Carlsen

First of all, barring a massive blunder from Magnus this position is dead lost. But it will take hours to finish losing it.
Secondly, you’re talking about a GM who’s around 50 years old who was playing his fifth game in five days with four more to come.
Energy is at a premium in these events, so why waste a lot of it getting ground down in a loss when you’re going to need a lot more of it.

But no reason to follow get here.

So if I understood correctly he gave up because he thinks that Carlsen would definitely be able to convert his advantage so he decided to save some energy for the next rounds instead of exhausting himself in a hopeless position which is difficult to draw against a world champion.

That would be my guess.
Seems that both players thought that Black was lost. See here for a few opinions:

i guess you could play it out using an engine, see how it plays against the best moves and against inferior moves.

the real reason is his name is too long and he is no Diego Armando Maradona either
It is good that he is not a fat drug addict and cheater.

GM Granda-Zuniga played in the Isle of Man open against Carlsen and lost. The reason why I'm writing about this was that I was a little surprised about the resignation by GM Granda-Zuniga.
Here is the game:
In the final position black is a pawn down. Granda-Zuniga gave up after Qg6. Why did he gave up so early? Isn't it possible to fight on?
There are GM-games where one side i a pawn down but they still continues to fight.
