Hikaru Nakamura is better than Magnus Carlsen?

This why wins and losses are more important than rating. It's easier to scrutinise someone when you can see who they've beaten and lost to, rather than seeing a number.

Hikaru's Blitz rating is 3021, while Magnus's  Blitz rating is only 2992. Also, Hikaru has played thousands and thousands of games in both Blitz and Bullet, which proves his rating is accurate, while Magnus has only played like 70 blitz games and 22 bullet games.

If a lot of games proves a rating is accurate, what does a lot fewer games prove?

If you want to see who is better, compare their face-to-face matches.

Yes.

I just realized this post was from 2017.....

Magnus is the god of chess , rating of 2986 in blitz !! He beats Andrew Tang with Bong Cloud in bullet !! He get 99% accuracy in some bullet games !! He is the world champion since 6 years, without  any doubt Magnus is the greatest player of all time in all formats, bullet, blitz, rapid and classical.

Magnus is much much better than Hikaru in blitz and bullet.

Is the world championship every other year?

Umm, they just finished playing a 7 match series (match, not game) and not only did it go the full 7, the 7th went all the way to armageddon. Carlsen won, but praised Naka for pushing him to the limit, and Naka said other than the prize money difference he didn't even feel like he lost (he drew the armegeddon game which counts as a loss).

So I'd say they're pretty much equal in non classical time controls, and other than maybe Firouja, they're far ahead of everyone else in rapid and blitz.

rishabh11great

What they played 7 matches?? Really ? OMG thats like 28 games.

llama

Yeah, it was a lot of games.

rishabh11great

llama 1 game ?? unrated blitz? 3+2?

The problem is your using chess.com ratings, if you look at FIDE ratings which is the real deal you will see the difference!

Naka hasn't been rated as low as 3000 on chess.com for years.

”I'd say they're pretty much equal in non classical time controls”

They were pretty much equal in one online event at least, but Carlsen has won in all eight rapid/blitz World Championships (Nakamura 0), and he also won four of the five online events in this tour (Dubov won the fifth).

rishabh11great

In bullet, Carlsen is much better, Blitz, Carlsen has a slight edge but in rapid and blitz, without any doubt Carlsen is ahead of everyone , Even Fabi and Ding.

EndgameEnthusiast2357

How often do they even play against each other?

If you factor out ratings, world championships, and head-to-head, then maybe. But then again, I am not so highly rated to make these kind of assessments like some of the non-OTB 1700-level titans here.

I don't see how this is so complex.  Magnus is the second greatest classical player of all time, and definitely the best player today (although Fabi is extremely close).  HIkaru is the best blitz and bullet player of all time (although blitz and bullet are relatively new, and so we don't know who will be the best player after a hundred years of players playing blitz/bullet like they have classical).  Magnus is better in some ways, Hikaru is better in others.  Give it a rest.

"HIkaru is the best blitz and bullet player of all time"

If Carlsen has won the blitz World Championship the last three years and five times in all, while Nakamura never won it, it gets a bit difficult to claim that Nakamura is the best blitz player of all time... There's of course also events like this one:

Winning tournaments, while an important factor in understanding the skill of a player, is a rather unreliable form of measuring a player's skill.  If we relied solely on that, we would find that the best Women's player in the world at the moment is Ju Wenjun, not Hou Yifan, for example.
