It's certain that many good games were lost, but a lot of chess players want to record friendly games in case they are interesting. It shows their dedication to the game.

How are there so many remembered old chess games. Ok, I get that the games played in tournaments are written down, but there are many games that are played in a friendly manner between people that we have available and now youtubers (such as Agadmator) analyze.
Did people simply remember those games by heart? were there many good games lost because there was nobody there to record them? Is it true that a GM can remember all his games and could replay them in their mind?
