How do you pronounce Richard Réti's last name?

Ree-tee?

Ray-tee?

Reh-tee?

Ree-tie?

Ray-tie?

Reh-tie?

According to Wikipedia, he was born in Slovakia, though it's not clear if his ethnic background was Hungarian or Slovakian.

OK, that explains the vowels...is the 't' really pronounced like a 'd'?

Avatar of TalFan

I thought it was Rehtee

You don't exactly give it a hard D sound but it isn't a separated T sound either. It is somewhere in between and somewhat leans toward a D.

in my case, as in spanish language i used to say something like

Reh-tea  :-)  some russian/slovak player can explain ?

I don't think there is only one correct way to pronounce a name . For example Mikhail Tal's surname in Russia ( and eastern european countries ) is written as Talj and pronounced differently to the Anglonised Tal .

Réti is a Hungarian name, the only difficulty is the "é" which is similar to the first vowel in "make", "aim".

James- I pronounce it fee-an-shet-oh but I have a feeling it's actually a hard ch sound like in cheese, which would make me incorrect.

Avatar of mydixiewrecked

I believe fianchetto is supposed to be pronounced with a k sound for the ch. I'm not positive, but that's how I first heard it, and how I've always pronounced it.

Avatar of Nytik

That's what I was trying to say. It SHOULD be pronounced fee-an-ket-oh but I'm happy mispronunciating, I prefer the way I say it.

Reti was born in Pezzinok, then (1889) in Hungary and later ( after WW I ) Czechoslovakia, and today in Slovakia. It was for Czechoslovakia that he was to play the international team tournaments between the wars.

( from Golombek's Encyclopedia of Chess )

I have always pronounced his name : Ray - tee  but dont know if thats correct or not

Another interesting one is Kasparov, I pronounce it Kass-pah-rov with the middle 'a' sounding like it does in rat, but a lot of people pronounce it Kass-par-ov with the middle 'a' sounding like it does in car. But that doesn't mean I'm going to change the way I say it!

Avatar of mydixiewrecked

Fair enough.

EDIT: This post is in response to the post below it.

EDIT2: I accidentally editted this post instead of posting a new one.

You said 'ch' like in cheese, so unless you pronounce cheese like the word keys, it doesn't seem we were implying the same pronunciation.

I know, but I was stumbling. For some reason 'k' didn't come to my mind. A mental block, if you will.

i think it is fee-an-ket-oh but i dont normally use it in everyday language ;)

awsome. ' i pronounce Reti "Ready"  and kasparov kuh-SPAR-ov  with the ar like car...fianchetto with a k...while were on words and enunciation how do you say (i cant even spell them so ill define them along with my crude attempt) zugzwang-the uncomfortable compulsion to move and zinschzug-an intermittentor in between move?  how about Euwe?  i heard er-VA like in nervous without the n and the s...Alekhine? al-yek-hine, al-aka-hin, ala-kaheen?  Smyslov?  smee-slov smiss-slov?

Avatar of goldendog

smeets-lov

I've heard Euwe as Er-vuh and also oiv-uh.

zugawang is tsootsvang but I'll leave it to a native speaker to improve on that.

Stein is Shtane

Alekhine is Al-YEK-in but  I think with that K raspy not hard.

Kasparov as Kahs-PAR-ahv.

Bot-VIN-ik

Tal as TAL-(yuh) as Shirov said it.

At one time I contemplated putting together a webpage of native speakers pronouncing such stuff, but that was a long time ago and maybe the time has passed as the web has evolved.
