How long did it take you to become a 1200?

you prob won't believe me, but I've been playing chess for about 2 months now - i knew the rules for a long time but lost to literally everybody. 2 months ago i was about 400-500 rating, but after 1 month of only playing chess i managed to beat my dad who stands at about 2000 rating. now im just trying to get to 2200 soon. so to answer the question, i was around 1200 in about 1-2 weeks from starting to diligently train the game. i am a fast learner in most areas, but still managed to go from newbie to experienced player quite quickly in all honesty. i play and train chess for at least 4 hours a day and it's basically all i do now, so I guess that's how i learnt so fast.

Things are different now.  When I started playing chess "officially", the USCF default provisional rating was 1500, and I went up to 1750 in my first tournament.  Never been below 1400.

I won 3rd place in a tournament when I was 8, but that was unrated...but my rating would have been whatever rating it takes to force a win with K+2R vs. K+R wink.png...

Ok but you played two games against 900's to get the 2000 rating

I seriously doubt you got that in 1 month -_-

Alright, there is absolutely no way you got to 2k otb in a month. Magnus carlsen didn't do that.

it's less about getting to 2k in 2 months, but more of being able to beat 2k rated players in classical games over the board in 2 months - which is completely possible

Avatar of neatgreatfire

Ah, ok. Yes, by luck it is possible.

What's your main?

When I started playing seriously, it took about a month or two for rapid chess.com. Now one year later and I’m around 1650. Increase in study time of master games, and visualization practice will be required to improve further I believe. At least for otb.

I didn’t play any chess over the summer

I probably would’ve became a 1200 faster.
