My distaste for Fischer the man (as opposed to Fischer the chess-player, whom I admire) is based on his rabid anti-semitism, which was painfully evident long before his troubles with the US government started.
I support Fischer's view of the US ( dont judge fischer)

rubbish.the better question is....why he felt the need to study chess to the exclusion of other things?to overcompensate for what?In essence he didn't really hate the Us...or the Russians....or the Jews.he hated HIMSELF.

I think his hatred for the United States Government had more to do with paying taxes than anything else.
The US did nit want Fischer to play the rematch with Spassky so he then hated the US after he got arrested in japan for playing the match and taking the money. But before judging him about his hatred for the US (ex: (he said after 911) that it is about time that the US got their god damn heads kicked in) Ask your self how you would feel if you spent most of your day everyday studing chess or practicing any other activity and you become the best in the world then your country says you cant play or do whatever that activity sport etc. i would be pissed and i would feel just as fischer felt
I think you need to review the history and evidence before writing that you agree with Fischer about the US. It was Fischer who left chess by the way, chess didn't leave him.

Fischer could have played elsewhere, trouble free, even if he'd have to take a pay cut.
The issue clearly wasn't chess.

Rational discussion about Fischer is possible only in the context of his chess. He was a brilliant player who swept his opponents aside almost like a god. In any other context, though, rational discussion about Fischer is impossible. He was a seriously disturbed man, the victim of his own demons, his narrow focus, his anti-Semitism, his paranoia, and--yes--probably a degree of self-hatred.
Let's treasure the games he left behind. As to the rest of his legacy, we can only leave that to history.
