Aronian has slipped below 2800 and lost 3 games in a row. This is his real rating, maybe a bit lower.

Aronian will be top 5 in the world for years to come. Perhaps we're witnessing the arrival of a new #2 in the world with Caruana, but one tournament is just that, a single event. Let's see how he fares in the next Candidates' cycle.

I've been told that players rated under 1800 USCF can't tell the difference between a player rated 2000 and one rated 2600 in a simul. 

So, from Superqueen's perspective, she's right. There's no practical difference between the two players. In fact, even I would have a hard time discerning who played which game in a blind test.

That doesn't mean they're equal, it just shows how far above amateurs they both are.

Hmm, well it depends on how low for me. I mean when I was a beginner I couldn't find fault in a 1500s play. But I mean, even when I was 1200 or something, yeah, I admired 2000 players but I did not at all consider them to be similar to grandmaster level players. I would be equally hopeless playing either one (0% chance essentially), but I could see a huge difference between the players when looking at their games/play.

Of course, smaller differences like IM vs GM, and probably master vs. GM as well, were quite hard to tell, and the former I certainly can't tell apart today.

Aronian just beat Anand, who won the Candidates 2014 undefeated. Aronian is not a weak player by any stretch. I'd just like to see him beat Carlsen for once.
