It would be easier to get comparisons in some years, if she plays more in FIDE rated events, that way we can check her evolution against other juniors around the world.

Now her FIDE rating is 1677, but it should be easily higher than 1900 (according to her USCF rating of 2024).

people don't really play fide games that much in the US.  especially kids.

I was thinking that since she is the U.S. Wonder Girl, she could get invitations or funding to travel to tournaments in other countries.

thats a total lol

Well, I know about other kids that got their traveling expenses covered (by a cement producer and a private school), but it was not in the U.S., it was in Peru.

I didn´t think it was a total impossibiliy in the U.S., it looks like it is, according to the lols.

No, just no.

going into the last round of the liberty bell open in philadelphia, which finished yesterday, 6 of the top 20 were U13 in age (including a 2031 US on bd 2! who came back with 15 seconds on his clock from lost positions with over 25 moves to time control to win two games against strong masters [there was a 10 second delay]), of the others, 5 were GMs, 1 IM, 1 FM and the rest NMs.  but it's clear that these youngsters already were fulfilling some of their great potential.  time will tell if they should evolve into great players...

Yereslov

She goes to my club. She is good, but she is no Magnus Carlsen.

She plays 1. e4 openings well, but has a poor understand of the Queen's Gambit and Nimzo-Indian.

She mostly plays against 1900's. She doesn't do as well against 2000+ rated opponents.

The next Magnus Carlsen?!  Could be!  Carissa just broke the USCF record as the youngest female to achieve a master rating!  Congratulations Carissa!  She's not just a great player, but a great kid as well!  (She plays at my club - the Wachusett Chess Club in Fitchburg, Massachusetts).

Alice Wells donut think that Carissa Yip can be the next Magnus Carlsen because Carissa Yip's name is not Magnus Carlsen!

I think both Carissa and Jennifer Yu have very bright futures ahead of them.
Both can become GMs. And rather strong ones at that.

They are definitely good chess players and probably if she works really hard she can be really good. I mean anything is possible, take Akshat Chandra for example.

Bumping a very old thread, but with new information.....

Okay, so Carissa may not be the next Magnus, but on the latest FIDE September Rating List, she is now rated 2425 ELO, which makes her the #1 rated woman player in the USA.  (#41 in the World, #5 Junior Girl world wide).  And she doesn't turn 16 until next month.

Uncle_Bent

Carissa will be playing in the 2020 Cairns Cup, next month, in St Louis.  It's a ten player, all woman, event that includes current World Ch (as of today!) Ju Wenjun, plus Humpy Koneru, Lagno, Mariya Muzychuk and others.  Carissa, is the only non-GM in the field and the lowest rated, but she is not out-classed -- based on her play from last summer.  (At last word, Magnus will NOT be playing.  happy.png )
