Jan Gustafsson

I was at the Bundesliga game today between Baden Baden and Augsburg. Jan Gustafsson played on board 7 for Baden Baden. At one point he had a coughing attack and stood up and walk right by me to the rest room. What surprised me was how tall he is. He’s gotta be about 6’5”. He just towers above everyone else in the room.

It’s cool to live in Germany and be able to see all of these chess stars once every two months at the games up close and personal. They mingle with the audience when they take their breaks. And if you got the guts, you can even talk with them 😁.

Gut gemacht.

Gustafson is extremely tall, almost Kramnik-size. I believe he said what his height was on one of his banter blitz videos, but he gave it in centimeters. Besides Kramnik, who was the tallest world champion?

I'm gonna say Bobby Fischer?

Max Euwe was very tall, too: 6ft2in/1.88m. About an inch taller than Fischer.

Now, who was the tallest grand master to make it to the Candidate stage? And the shortest. I'm guessing Miroslav Filip (1962 Curacao) was the tallest and Sammy Reshevsky (Zurich  1953)  was the shortest

How does he look like he's 15 when he's about 40?

He has one of those faces. Over time, the hairline recedes a bit, the lines around his eyes and mouth get deeper, but from a distance in looks as if he's hardly aging at all.

Or. theory#2: Locked in his attic at home he has a portrait of himself painted when he was a handsome youngster, The ravages of every year and every sin now show on that portrait, while Jan continues to look young

Kramnik is tied with Smyslov as the tallest WC. Both 196cm
