Waitzkin got me from 800 to 1600, mr.pfren

DrSpudnik

lol: just looking at what you're doing and remembering that your opponent has pieces too will get you from 800 to 1600.

Conflagration_Planet

Fischer was a GM at 15. Josh had not yet even made IM yet.

lol that's funny. Josh could just use a flourescent light or pretend there's a russian mind control device in his coffee mug and scare Bobby off.

I have a chess book by Waitzkin somewhere.  I remember I enjoyed it very much.  As an author, his personality shines through.  I think he did some narration for later Chessmaster computer applications too.  His books, or at least the one I have, are rather lightweight, chess-wise - more fun to read than really educational.  In that respect IM pfren is right on the money, if a little blunt about it.  So, on a personal level, he seems very charismatic. I sure wouldn't mind having a few beers with him.  While he played a decent game of chess, he never even approached Fischer's level.

Decent huh? Well good luck beating him.

Defining a chess player relative to me is totally pointless, doncha think?

TheOldReb

Obviously someone here is in love with Waitzkin and everyone knows that love is blind !  Wink

TheGrobe

Chess or Jiu-Jitsu?

batgirl

Well, I did call him a decent player.... not an indecent one.

I found a Fischer interview that made him look like a decent guy. However, it's the billion other interviews that bear out a different point

Sorry, I quoted the wrong post previously. Fischer was capable of being extremely charming by all accounts. But then so was Hitler and Ted Bundy. Just saying. My vote:

Chess...Fischer.

Well-rounded, happy, human-being...Waitzkin. : )

I feel like everyone is repeating everyone else's posts...could just be me...

You people don't give Waitzkin enough credit. The man has played many remarkable games and even drew Kasparov at a young age. I believe that while Fischer may have been the stronger player, Waitzkin in his own right would have given Fischer plenty to think about each and every game.

Anyway, I would side with Waitzkin out of principle as he isn't a complete dick about every little thing.

Fischer would win a 10 game match... but I know what you are saying. Josh has accomplished so much in his life outside of chess... education (working with youth), martial arts (national and world champion)... and he is not a jerk... he is very cool.

MrEdCollins

Fischer was world-class strength long before he reached the age of 20.

Waitzkin was talented, but he was never world-class strength.  It makes no difference if he had access to Fischer's games and theoretical knowledge.  He just didn't have as much chess talent, plain and simple.

Fischer was born in 1943.  In the early '60s, Fischer's rating hovered between 2650 and 2750.  Josh Waitzkin's peak rating, when he was 22, was only 2480.  This is a huge gap.

I don't consider Waitzkin a true prodigy.  Oh, he might have been a very gifted youngster, and he definitely benefitted from having so many chess coaches.  Morphy, Reshevsky, Fischer... now they were chess prodigies.

Don't forget Kasporav. True prodigy right there. He knew his stuff.

By the way, I don't even know who Joshua Waitzkin is, so I'd say Fischer would win in this wey-lla competition.

Four pages?  Well, I guess this comment adds to the discussion.

And yes, of course, Fischer would have won easily.
