Kacparov's progress

Is there a thread for this already?  Kacparov (and some other chess.com members too, I'm sure) is playing in the U14 division at the World Youth Chess Championships in Greece.  He won his 1st round game (playing White on Board 7) on Wednesday, and drew in Round 2 (playing Black on Board 5) yesterday (Thursday).  Out of 128 U14 players, 20 remain perfect and will play the top 10 boards for Round 3.

For Round 3, Kacparov is scheduled to play White on Board 13 against Ikramul Haque Siam (Bangladesh).

Round 3 is today (Friday October 22) and starts at 1600 EEST (Greece), 1300 (UTC), 0900 EDT (eastern U.S.).  There is live game coverage for at least some of the games.

Somebody started a thread on this with the actual games but nice to see so much kacparov support

kco

is that his real name ? Drozdowski, Kacper

musicalhair

Yeah, here's hoping he has a great tournament.

William_Smitham

Yes, I agree.  I hope that he has a great tournament as well.  Smile

Cystem_Phailure

I just saw some photos of the Porto Carras resort where this tournament is being held.  I'm sure they're too busy to take advantage of their surroundings, but still, I doubt there are many complaints about the location. Cool

musicalhair

Wow, that is nice!  You're probably right.  I remember when I was in the navy I went to all kinds of nice places that might've looked like that but too often all I saw was the inside of the ship.

I see Kacparov has won his Round 3 game.  Up next in Round 4 he plays Black on Board 6 against FM Tran Tuan Minh from Vietnam.  That's tomorrow (Saturday, Oct 23) with the same starting times as I gave in the OP for today's round.

There are 9 players remaining with a thus-far perfect 3 points (Kacper has 2.5 now).

Another win for Kacparov, this time playing Black against a fellow FM!  His score after 4 rounds is 3.5/4 .  Only 2 players out of 128 remain perfect.

Kacparov will play White on Board 3 for Round 5 tomorrow, against Sahoo Utkal Ranjan (2213) from India, who managed a draw today playing White on Board 1 against an IM rated 2418.

Note that there are two rounds scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday 10/24), so Round 5 will start earlier than usual:

0900 (EEST) -- 0600 (UTC) -- 0200 (EDT)

Round 6 will be at the usual time later in the day, at 1600 (EEST).  Pairings for Round 6 obviously won't be known until the conclusion of Round 5.

Players then get a rest day on Monday after their double load tomorrow.

cludi will post the pgn for today's game when it becomes available.

Two draws for Kacper on the double-round day.

For the first game Kacper played White aganst Sahoo Utkal Ranjan in Round 5, and though the game was even much of the time, Kacper was fortunate to draw. After Black's 38th move, Ranjan's mathematical evaluation for the position was greater than 10, and I thought Kacper might resign before making a 39th move.  However, the move he made lured Ranjan into a blunder with Black's 39th move, and instantly brought the position back to nearly even!  They drew by repetition after the 44th move, leaving them about 2.5 hours before their Round 6 games started up.

There was no time to prepare for a specific opponent for Round 6, since the pairings were not known until shortly before the round started.  After all the Round 5 results there was only 1 perfect player remaining.  Kacper was ranked 9th after Round 5, and for Round 6 he played Black on Board 4 against Ynojosa Felix Jose (2229) from England. Jose won his first 4 games but lost his Round 5 game earlier today.  The Jose-Kacper game was balanced and ended as a draw by repetition after 36 moves in about 3.25 hours.

Both the Round 5 and Round 6 games have been posted by cludi.

Thus, for the double-round day Kacper manages 2 draws after about 6.5 hours of play, and now has 4.5/6 points.  Everyone now gets a day off.  Round 7 is on Tuesday, October 26, at 1600 (EEST) and Kacper will be playing White on Board 5 against David Adelberg (2201) from the U.S.

The one-day break now is just past the mid-point of the tournament, with 6 of 11 rounds completed.  There is still one perfect player-- Laurusas Tomas (2291) from Lithuania.  Here are the numbers of players with various point totals after 6 rounds:

6.0/6 -- 1
5.5/6 -- 0
5.0/6 -- 2
4.5/6 -- 18
4.0/6 -- 11
3.5/6 -- 21
3.0/6 -- 19
2.5/6 -- 27
2.0/6 -- 12
1.5/6 -- 12
1.0/6 -- 3
0.5/6 -- 0
0.0/6 -- 2
TOTAL = 128

Kacper is officially ranked 10th after 6 rounds.

Tuesday brought Kacparov his third draw in a row at the World Youth Chess Championships.  Kacper and David Adelberg agreed to a draw after reaching this position with White's 61st move:

Kacper now has 5 points and has slipped a bit in the tournament rankings down to 11th place.  There is still a player with a perfect record!  Laurusas Tomas of Lithuania has 7 points and has opened up a 1.5 point lead over the 6 players tied for 2nd place (5.5 points).  Thus, while Kacper is now a full 2 points behind the leader, he is only half a point behind the 2nd best score, with 4 rounds remaining.

Tomorrow (Wednesday October 27) Kacper plays Black on Board 8 against Javanbakht Nima (2204), from Iran, who has 4 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss (Round 3).  In today's round Nima played Black and pulled off a draw against IM Vaibhav Suri (2418) from India, so Nima is clearly a tough opponent.  Start time is the usual 1600 (EEST), 1300 (UTC), 0900 (EDT).

Here are the numbers of players with various point totals after 7 rounds:

7.0 -- 1
6.5 -- 0
6.0 -- 0
5.5 -- 6
5.0 -- 13
4.5 -- 14
4.0 -- 19
3.5 -- 23
3.0 -- 16
2.5 -- 19
2.0 -- 10
1.5 -- 4
1.0 -- 1
0.5 -- 2
0.0 --  0
TOTAL -- 128

Note that all players are on the board now.  No one is still left with 0.0 points.

Hope Kacparov can win his next game

Cystem_Phailure

Kacparov got dinged today with his first loss of the tournament, in Round 8.  Javanbakht Nima, playing White, won their game, but I don't know any details at all yet, as the pgn has not been posted, and his game was not among the 40 games that were updated live today.  Kacper stays at 5 points for the tournament, and his rank has slipped to 22nd.

3 rounds remain in the tournament.  Tomorrow (Thursday) in Round 9 Kacper is back on the White side of the board, squaring off on Board 13 against Boscolo Federico (2152) from Italy.  Federico has 4 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses, and is coming off a win from his game today.  Game time will be the usual 1600 (EEST)

At the top of the pack, Laurusas Tomas finally suffered a loss, but he still has the top spot to himself with a half-point lead over two other players.  Here are the point distributions after 8 rounds:

7.0/8.0 -- 1
6.5 -- 2
6.0 -- 9
5.5 -- 8
5.0 -- 17 (Kacparov's total)
4.5 -- 13
4.0 -- 26
3.5 -- 15
3.0 -- 17
2.5 -- 12
2.0 -- 4
1.5 -- 2
1.0 -- 2
0.5 -- 0
0.0 -- 0
TOTAL -- 128
