it was me
Mystery online chess player
Thanks for the tries folks, those are very good suggestions. However, the guy I'm thinking of wasn't a troll like Cheater, in fact he hardly ever spoke and as far as I know there was only one brief exchange via PM with someone. People were trying to get him to talk more to maybe pick up clues as to syntax, spelling etc. to try to figure out his country. Maybe it was Raffael (Kasparov), though as I recall he had "Russia" selected on his profile at playchess.com whereas with the guy I was thinking of people were trying to guess what country he was from in order to narrow the field of possible candidates. There was talk that his playing style and the lines he played were very similar to a professional Korean player at the time.
Did Raffael vanish from the online chess community for like a year and then return?
Hello all. Years ago there was a player online who would surface every couple of years or so and generated quite a bit of discussion as to his real identity; there were even webpages that examined his playing style (he was very strong) and compared it to various GMs and IMs in a quest to match them and figure out who he was. Many thought he was a professional player. I recall there was an online match set up between him and the top-ranked player of some chess site or another and he showed, but I don't recall the outcome. I am trying to remember the screen name of this guy.
I know I haven't provided much information, but I'm hoping he will ring a bell among players that have been playing online for a long time. He caused quite a buzz at the time.
