Players like Tigran Petrosian

Sort:
Saibashi

I'm trying to find a chess strategy to stick to and specialize in.  I've read that Tigran Petrosian was known for his defensive playing style.  I think I want to play defensively as well.  Are there any similar players to Petrosian I should know about and study?  Thanks.

Ulf Andersson was another very strong defensive player - there are no players exactly like Petrosian - he was unique.  But Andersson was a great defensive player who specialized in endgames and hedgehog positions.

seriously Anderrson´s moves are beyond me, wow i couldnt tell the difference  between his strategy and shuffling pieces.

I know its just because im so weak, but its really hard to understand his moves.

damn why did i order the petrosian book, i probably wont understand him as well

You may want to analyze Karpov's games as well. He is a purely positional player. Also look at Kramnik's games in the 2000s.

Whoa.. Karpov?  Purely positional?  That's a ridiculous statement, he played very aggressively and tactically in a lot of his games.  He's one of the best positional players ever and that's what he's known for, but he could handle himself with the initiative quite well...

lol french common that wasnt played by Karpov right??

Ulf Andersson is similar to Petrosian. The book Grandmaster Chess Strategy by Jurgen Kaufeld & Guido Kern is a very instructive book and features Andersson's games.

I once played a person here on Chess dot com that played TP in the Olympiad thing representing their countries years ago (TP won needless). He had beat me 18 in a row - and he loved playing me....of course. So, here I was, 0-18 playing my heart out - losing every game - and I snap mated him ! I was so happy....he aborted every game after that - refused to play me again (I'm not naming names). I felt that was kinda sour.

Viktor Korchnoi has/had some crazy defensive skills.
