This poem was published on July 29, 1884 in memory of Paul Morphy who had just died on the 10th of that month. It was written by the famous chess problemist, Miss Frideswide Fanny Beechey of (ironically?) Limerick, Ireland and published under that name although she had just married Thomas Benjamin Rowland on the 5th of June.
