BTW: the rallying cry to "read the Austrians" (Hayek, von Mises et al) is basically a statement that the power relationships established by the dominant economic system can't be tinkered with at all, since any attempt to make anything better for anyone will lead to everything being worse for everyone. It displays a total lack of imagination in service to power.

That's what we're all told. The questions we aren't supposed to think of relate to how much intrusion into the world of business and finance the government to engage in and why. this all becomes politically charged and fuses the two systems together, often with business capturing the government.

You're straying into the realm of discussing politics itself rather than what the political views of chess players are: that's going to get this thread locked.

I'm not seeing how these can be disentangled. At some point, the question of just how much of a Nazi was Alekhine or how far up the butt of the Central Committee of the USSR was Botvinnik or Karpov is going to come up.

Which is why I'm surprised the thread isn't locked - I suppose when something starts off okay, the mods stop watching it and it's only when it resurfaces that they get around to actioning it.
