There is a nice story in my ' Why Simaginfan' post - Korchnoi talking about this game says that he was stupid enough to repeat his opening line again, against Simagin, and got crushed!! At work on phone, so can't do links - sorry😒

But you don’t say anything about how you got crushed in the same Rnd 1 of the 20th ch against this guy? That was shame... (check #126 above)

At the 1944 Moscow championship (Botvinnik, Smyslov, Kotov, Ragozin, Mikenas, Panov, Alatortsev, Lisitsyn took part) Simagin won eight games and lost eight. No draws. So much unlike today’s players. Loads of nice games!
My vote goes to Carl Schlechter. He drew Lasker in 1910 when Lasker was in his prime. He defeated Pillsbury at Hastings 1895. He won Vienna 1897, Munich 1900, Vienna 1900,, 1904, 1905, Stockholm 1906, Ostend 1906, Vienna 1908, Prague 1908, Hamburg 1910, , Vienna 1910, and many other excellent results.
There's a reason Reti included him in "New Ideas in Chess, and "Masters of the Chessboard." I've been studying his games and find them very impressive.
