Which GM's have you met in person?

Please list the Grandmasters that you have met in person and where you met them.  Just seeing them at a tournament doesn't count.  You had to have actually talked to them.

Here's my list:

Roman Dzindzichashvili (talked to him at a tournament in Greenville, SC)

Dmitry Gurevich (talked to him at a tournament in Jacksonville, Fl.)

Michael Rhode (played against him in a simul in Melbourne, Fl. and discussed the game afterwards)

Martin_Stahl

Timur Gareev. 2015 US Championsip Opening Ceremony.

I'm not really a people person so missed my chance to formally meet any others then.

pam234

Nigel Short. Played against him in a simultaneous in 1975. Got a draw.

Me either.   I guess I was more sociable back then though.   lol

Nice job.  You drew Nigel Short, eh?   You must be pretty good.   I lost in my simul.

In 1975 he was 13 and I was 18. I was a much stronger player then too.

Yassir Seirawan - he spoke at seattle chess club, talked to him in store at inside chess.

Anatoly Karpov - worked on stage demo boards for his match against johann in quarterfinals.

Johann Hjartsen - same place as Karpov

Maurice Ashley - taught a scholastic coaches clinic I attended

Paul Morphy - I channel him frequently when I play. Hate when I get mixed signals and start channeling Homer Simpson by accident. Game kind of goes south from there.....................

Very impressive list.  Especially Karpov.  Did Maurice Ashley ever make GM?   I thought the highest he got was IM.   And Paul Morphy doesn't count.  lol

Boris Spassky.

He delivered a lecture here in Dublin (Ireland) at Trinity College in late 1980's. The man is a gentleman.

I asked him if he had heard from Bobby Fischer and he said that he had but that out of respect for Bobby he would not reveal what they had talked about!

Awesome.  I see that a few of you have actually met World Champions.   Too cool.

I count myself very lucky.

Boris Spassky was delivering a lecture at Trinity.

He was also interviewed on Ireland's most popular TV chat show at the time and he came across really well on that too. And absolute gent.

Nice list.  There are a couple of U.S. Champions and a World Champion on that list.   Do you play a lot of open sections in tournaments?

yes, Maurice is a GM

You are correct,  He became a GM in 1999.   Back in the "old days", he was an IM.

I've never heard of him, but he is a GM.  I just looked him up.

WOW...I forgot the biggest name on the list.  Max Euwe. I met Euwe, Spassky, and Browne at a tournament at the Paul Masson winery back in the day.

I have played in a couple of opens, but generally im not that good so i play up to play in them.  I have generally met these guys at tournaments, and for whatever reason hit it off with them.

Some friends and I played Pai Gow last March in Reno with Enrico Sevillano.  Great guy!

Wow, Max Euwe.  Another World Champion.  It must have been quite a few years back.

Yep...back in 1979.  I got the autographs of Euwe, Spassky, Browne, and George Koltanowski.
