Did you compliment anyone directly? I guess I missed that. It seemed more like someone took photos from chess tournaments without women's knowledge and posted them, then some random people started talking about their attractiveness amongst themselves.

Expressing a genuine crush is not offensive, so I see no problem with your first post on the thread, for the record. But if you are also genuine in wanting to understand, then you've already got enough information here on page 1 to figure that out.

The word "celebrity" is relative. These chessplayers are not making a living by putting themselves out there for commentary. If you are trying to say that you really cannot understand even after my joking example why somebody might not find this welcome, then I would say that's pretty hard to believe.
