Based on longevity, ratings strength, and tournament success it has to be Kasparov. Everyone else, except maybe Karpov, comes close. The current world champion needs to put in more years, Fischer was not around long enough, Alekhine did have to go through the rigors of the modern championship cycle.
It depends on your criteria. Fischer, for example, made a claim for the best ever but I feel he was not around long enough. Based on longevity I would rank him below Kasparov and Karpov. His incredible but brief period from 1970-72 is just too short to merit ranking number 1.

Fischer was "not around long enough" because he had some now obsolete principles like:
1. if you are confident that you will win a match, it's a courtesy gesture to let your opponent win the first game (in the match of 1972)
2. it is better to retire in glory as the Champion of the World than to end-up defeated later

Who can say? I mention Akiba Rubenstein, Karl Schlecter, Paul Keres. Emanuel Lasker. But I always liked the games of the older players. I can almost understand what they are doing in their games.

Last month i think computer analysed the games of Fisher, capablanca, kasparove and other former chess champions . The computer was asked to poick the best chess player ever. and computer pick was Magnus Carlson.
I love to say Alekhine but no, its Capablanca. Capa was the most gifted chess player of all time, no one come close to not even the currect" world champion" Carlsen.
