But .. but .... but they don't have to read the thread, they just need to move it to the right forum, the site really could do with a Fischer Forum! hehe!
Who is the greatest chess player of all time ?? Bobby Fischer ??

i would have to say that bobby fischer is the best chess player of all time because beat all the russians, and didnt lose a game to them, and he was considered a grand master at the age of 14, and if you take the time to wcheck, he won most all of his games against pretty much everybody, and if you go on youtube, keven, from the chess website shows that he won all of his games

Everybody is mistaken...
If you ever played
The Turk
You would know who is the greatest of all time.

If chess.com automatically deleted all topics with any of the following words in it the forums would be much more surveyable.
- Fischer
- Kasparov
- Carlsen
- girls
- greatest

No.

Fischer modernize chess for professionals, because of Bobby there is more money, and much better conditions. In the Philippines they were willing to pay 5 million dollars for Fischer and Karpov match in 1975, Carlsen still waiting for such nice sum of 5 million dollars, Kasparov and Karpov was never pay this amount.

Emanuel Lasker is the Greatest player of all time.Until someone breaks his record of 27 years of tenure, that is.

Capablanca won against a GM who prepared the marshall attack against him, and capa didn't know any theory of the marshall when it was played against him.
Not just a GM, but Frank Marshall himself!
He held back the Marshall Attack for years until he could play the Attack against Capablanca. Then Capa, calmly and over the board, played the best moves and won.
Just legendary.
It's all apples and oranges comparing Capablanca to Fischer to Kasparov to Karlsen. But for my money Capablanca is the spookiest player in history.

Steinitz did.
Not really. Steinitz was the undisputed World Champion from 1886 to 1894.

Anand. And one more thing: I hate Carlsen. lol

The obvious difference between the ancient superplayers and the masters of today is theory. If the ancient superplayers are able to figure it out without knowing modern theory, then the theoretic advantage the current masters have is limited, but they will have some winning preparations.
Magnus very often tries to lure the game away from theoretical lines. When Carlsen and Morphy are out of theory I have only one conclution: "Interesting!"

It makes sense that the top players today produce stronger and tighter chess than any of the past masters. It also makes sense to acknowledge that we do not really know how strong Morphy or Capa might be if he were born in modern times and had access to computers, modern theory, etc. But when talking of the Greatest -not strongest, Carlsen is the strongest ever- Fischer, Lasker, Kasparov, Capablanca, Morphy would be strong candidates IMO.
Morphy was genius but he was long ago and there weren't very strong grandmasters like Karpov, Petrosian, Kasparov...Morphy also was first unofficial first champion.

Jeff Sonas's excellent analysis of past champions has Garry at the top by wide margin taking into account many factors. Please take a look at his extensive 4 part series.

Kasparov had 17 tournament performances of 2820+ compared to Fischer of just 2.
Kasparov had the longest stretch as No.1 ..19.8 years.
Fischer had the highest rating ever 2895 chessmetrics rating in 1971.
Kasparov had the most top performing years 16.

And of course, once we stop the pretending, and acknowledge that Kasparov did in fact compete, and dominated even the mighty Karpov, then I think it's a no-brainer to answer the overriding question of these articles. If I had to hand out medals for who were the most dominant players of all time, I would give the gold medal to Garry Kasparov, and the silver medal (fittingly) to Anatoly Karpov. And then the bronze medal goes to either Emanuel Lasker or Bobby Fischer, depending on the fine print about whether the most important timeframe is their whole career or their peak year. Admittedly, I think it's pretty clear that for about a year, Bobby Fischer dominated his contemporaries to an extent never seen before or since. It's also clear that if you exclude Kasparov and Karpov from consideration, Emanuel Lasker was number one in the world longer than anyone else, and moves up to the top of the list on several other graphs you have seen throughout the course of these articles. Who deserves the bronze medal. Fischer or Lasker? Lasker or Fischer? And the debate rages on…" Jeff Sonas,
Would he by any chance have chosen the chess openings forum to write it up in ?
