Sometimes I feel I am the greatest chess player, but then I have to resign in nine moves and I come back to reality.
Who is the greatest chess player of all time ?? Bobby Fischer ??

#1 is certainly an open debate. Its possible to be objective once parameters are agreed on. One thing is really not open for debate. Fischer is not close in comparsion to many names mentioned. Anyone who thinks he is the best of all time is biased, unable to be objective in making real comparison.

Any criteria must include longevity. There are quite a few examples of brilliant players who played for a short period. Are they included on the list? Hardly, No matter the brilliance of play

Its clear that you dont have much onjectivity yourself .

Oooh. I want that poster for my bedroom. lol The list of all-time best players ................................ 1. Fischer 2. All the rest

I have no problem if anyone wants to make the claim Fischer played the best games ever.It is not the point. Being the best for such a short period of time 3/4 years tops does not qualify as being the best PLAYER ever. Many names mentioned were at the top for 20+ years. Those are the GREATS.

2ndly, it is quite impossible to compare quality of play over 100's of years. Players in the 1800's were brilliant players in their own right

If longevity at the top is your #1 criteria for GOAT then Lasker is your natural choice as he held the world title for 27 years , longer than anyone else . However , for 20 of those 27 years he did NOT defend his title . Should those 20 years count ? Back then the champion chose who he would or would not play and the challenger had to meet the champion's demands or wouldnt get a match . Should those 20 years count ?

Fischer played for very few years. Then quit. Quitters can not be on any reputable list . World Champions continued playing well past their prime, because they enjoy the game, not afraid of losing as RF was.

Yes, Fischer was deathly afraid of losing. He'd only play under his conditions. Part of the paranoid schizophrenia that he tragically suffered from. A brilliant chess mind, might even be labeled a prodigy by some, but the Greatest Player of all time? Not a chanch.
Referring back to the earlier posts about Fishers height.
Napoleon was 5 ft 6"
Alexander the Great 5ft 1"
J C 5ft 1"
