Kramnik
Who is/was the greatest 1.d4 player w/ white?

Pillsbury
Capa/Alekhine get my 2nd vote
Kramnik, but he played 1.Nf3 for years which often transposed.

I remember reading about a devoted 1.e4-hater in Rubinstein. After a tournament he was asked why he only played 1. e4 one time in all his games. He replied:
"I always play the best moves in the opening!"
I'm not sure if he's the best 1.d4 ever but 3 suggestions for the title: Botvinnik, Capa, Alekhine

Kasparov. He played 1.d4 in ways that most 1.d4 players don't/can't play...highly dynamic and energetic.
Karpov is the greatest d4 player. Kramnik a close second.
Maybe I'm off base here, but I think of Karpov as an e4 player, who had a pretty substantial body of work with c4, and maybe dabbled a little bit in d4 in terms of overall body of work.

As of now:
1.d4 996 games, 1.e4 579 games, 1.c4 197 games, 1.Nf3 152 games
