My dad and mother both played with me as a boy. I guess I learned when I was 5 or 6 but they bought me my first board when I was 8. It's a tournament triple weighted though it wasn't called that back then. The new pieces look funny to me, especially the knights. I still have this board and people joke its not Black and White but Black and Yellow. The pieces have been on 3 different continents with me, I think its actually in my car at this very moment. I quickly became better than both my parents but they would still play me, now not so much. I've never been to a tournament but I can play all day. In college when working in the studio my friends and I would break to play a game of chess. I then became roommates with one of them and every weekend we played chess, listened to jazz, and drank whatever alcohol we had left from the night before.
Who taught you how to play chess?

Chess Titans on Windows 7. I always wanted to learn it but thought it was impossible (as most non-players assume), but was surprised to see how easy it is learn what the goal is, and how all the pieces move. Of course I didn't learn how to develop any actual plans until joining this site and learning from my brethren. I never could beat the computer on Chess Titans until after joining this site.

My school and a close by one combined when i was in 7th grade .to know each other we had a period where we just got to talk and play games .one of the games was chess .i pretty much just learned the moves. after high school me and my friends played some but id say i was a really weak player. i took and interest in it and played whoever i could and got a little better and i spoke with a cousin who said he played and i told him i was a good player . when we played he destroyed me and i studyed and now we are both 1200 or 1300 players . chess . com has helped me tremendously
My dad. He actually taught me a game called lamb and wolves first, which was one white pawn (the lamb) and 4 black pawns (the wolves). You had to zigzag the lamb and avoid the wolves. I wonder if anyone teaches the children that one anymore!

I used to play Fox and Hounds for checkers (same concept).

I learned from a book. I was an inquisitive kid, so my parents bought me books to answer my questions. I remember getting a book about chess and I read through it, having no chess set, I was intrigued. I never really got the chance to play much because I didn't know anyone who knew how. It wasn't until high school that I found a friend who could play.

My uncle taught me. Then self study through newspaper and books. I followed Karpov vs Korchnoi games through local newspaper

my friend mike taught me how to play when we were in elementary school, after that i found out that my dad and uncle were good players (both non club level) and i played them as much as i could until i finally played in my first tournament at the houston chess club when i was in 8th grade.
i am melodramatic. it is the truth. with a some flair. give it a try... your life will be more interesting. it is all in what it means to you.
