Why does everyone spell Viswanathan Anand's name wrong

Almost everyone seems to spell Viswanathan Anand's name wrong (Vishwanathan Anand). I would assume this is because he has the nickname "Vishy", but does anyone else have any other ideas?

IDASP

MY name is Vishwa >:(

Not to be captain obvious here but its long and unfamiliar to most of the non Indian folks.  Couple that with a typical USA english person who makes typo's, grammatical goofs, and other such regularly in internet postings with words that are much shorter and more familiar, and well, its obvious:  there are a lot of people that can't spell well, have typing mistakes, and the spell checker is not going to save them on his name.   And I speak for myself also, I would have to do a web search, copy the name, and paste it.  Anything else, I would likely mess it up unless I were to dedicate a couple of days to memorize it.

Why isn't his nickname Nathan?

I have noticed it and tried to correct myself a lot of times but I still tend to make this error.

In India, most names with the 'sh' sound are spelt 'sh', as in English. Ask any other person with the same name, there is a 90% chance they will spell their own name with 'sh'. Some people also alter their names or spellings as a result of their beliefs in numerology.

A joke pertaining to this.

A lexicographer, in a conversation with a well known orator, claimed: Do you know that 'sugar' is the only word in the English language where 'su' is pronounced as 'shu'?

Orator: Are you sure?

If it was mainly typos, I would probably see it less than 95% of the time.

Who is Fishy Anad?

Immortui_Arrhabonem

Who cares? He isn't important, we know who is being refered to, so whats it matter?

freaky25

He is quite important, being the current world chess champion.

netzach

Kaspy would be horrified.

Immortui_Arrhabonem

My last name is butchered all the time, but everyone knows that i am being referred to. It honestly isn't a big deal unless it goes down in the record books as incorrect. In that case, yes, I would be mortified to see my name messed up. :/

Neeyaaro

What about SMBAT LPUTIAN ,and Lubomir FTACNIK? What if they had become world champs...

Satyapragyan Swayangshu from Odisha ....Many cannot pronounce half syllables . Sanskrit names are full of it. Swati will be pronounced SAWATI, GYAN as GAYAN or worse. It is not anaand it is AAnand.

JohnnyKGB

the world is not perfect buddy,  you expect to win in chess but you forget that your opponent have to fail.

freaky25

It is true all he does is play board games, but he is quite good at the board games he plays.

DrSpudnik

My last name has four letters and is pronounced phonetically. Still, almost no one can spell or pronouce it correctly. No sympathy here.

Ziryab

To the credit of those prone to typos, Carlsen's name is usually spelled wrong.

freaky25

Almost no one ever pronounces my first name right after simply seeing it on a page.

A little known fact is Sumac is also pronounced with the h and is frequently mispronounced.
