We must be talking about Soviet players. If you remove Bronstein, Geller and Stein (Ukraine), Petrosian (Armenia), Keres (Estonia), Tal (Latvia) the list of "Russian" grandmasters is a bit less impressive

It is less impressive but it stays quite impressive. Have you checked the list of Russian players who were world champions (my first post)? Alekhine, Botvinik, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Kosteniuk,...

Kasparov wasnt russian and Kosteniuk i believe is also not russian though, even though i cant recall Kosteniuk being world champion. But i guess Khalifman was russian though

Kasparov could qualify as Russian two ways: first his parentage is half Russian and second, his country of choice is Russia.

каспаров - prycckий.

If I say it in Russian does it make him more russian? (or at least if I tried to say it in Russian, I'm not very good).

In Russian, it's Russkii or Каспаров - русский. You added a latin letter to the cyrillic spelling.

shepi13

My bad. I'm not exactly fluent in russian. It sounds like an r, I put an r, even if I do remember to also put in a p.

shepi13

Don't make me try to spell that in russian Laughing

shepi13

I don't even think I can spell it in english.

Yes, Nezhmetdinov was an unbelievable player.  HIs tactics and combinations are amazing.

It's actually easier to spell in Russian than English:

Рашид  Нежметдинов.  Russian is mostly a phonetic language. There are only a few exceptions to spelling rules in Russian.

Obviously, I really like Vasily Smyslov. My current favorite Russian is Vladimir Kramnik. He combines the best chess of Smyslov, Petrosian and Karpov and manages to be friendly with almost all of his competition.

It looks fairly likely that Kramnik will face Anand in November. That will be a fantastic rematch, reminiscent of Alekhin-Capablanca and Karpov-Kasparov in terms of chess style. If this happens, it will be fantastic for chess! Carlsen will come back in two years hungrier and meaner than ever! He should be able to tear through the field in two years and then play a match against the old guard.

What a great time to be a chess fan!

I probably pick Boris Spassky.

However David Bronstein twice played a simultan in our chess club. Once after he had played the Zurich/Neuhausen Candidates 1953. The second time about 50 years later - I don't remember the correct year because I wasn't there - missed him (what a shame and a pitty). Cry
