4P Gothic

Hello chess.com!

I’m a 4PC player (specifically in Teams), and I am the creator of the official 4PC Teams club. Recently, I decided to try my hand at creating my own custom variant, but I’ve been having a hard time finding people to play and test the setup.

My idea is called 4P Gothic. (Screenshot below, and FEN4 can be found here.) Rules are 2|10 Teams, =HEQRBN on 11th.

Currently, I’m testing it in teams, The next step after that would be to test it out in FFA and get 5 tests there, so this setup could be played in either mode.

Does this setup look interesting to anyone? Would you be interested in helping me test this?

If you ARE interesting in helping me test, please do the following:

  1. Follow the instructions in this post on this thread.
  2. Post links below of any games you play.

Thanks for your help!

TheUltraTrap

looks good lol but why 5 test games requirement is 10

Green_Sleeves

I’ve already played 5.

Also, if anyone does play test games, please share them on this thread! grin.png

Are we on for testing it at 3 pm EST today?

Green_Sleeves

Yup!

One thing that jumps out at me right away is that the wing pawns are already in tension.  I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

Green_Sleeves

The wing pawns are actually soldiers, which means they take forwards instead of crooked. Having the wing pawns so close was a necessary evil since chess.com doesn’t let the board get bigger than 14x14.

MGleason

Ah, that's interesting.  So there's no tension unless one of them moves.

Green_Sleeves

Exactly.

PoultryMan

I have seen my friends play this chess variant. It's hard for me to play because I am used to the standard board.

Green_Sleeves

You’ve seen 4P Gothic, or just plain 4 player chess?

PoultryMan

Oh, I guess I have just seen the regular. It looks similar from glance. What is the difference?

Green_Sleeves

Mine is very similar to regular, except that I added two rows/columns for the Chancellor (Rook-knight) and Archbishop (Bishop-knight). There's already a variant called Gothic Chess, for two players. I made an adaptation for 4 players.

PoultryMan

I'll read up on it then. It looks pretty interesting along with a little confusing. Thanks!

Green_Sleeves

I just tried submitting this position last night, and some of the games I used didn’t count apparently. I still need 4 test games.

Green_Sleeves

Scratch that. Make it 5. I need to adjust the promotion rules.

Green_Sleeves

If anyone plays with this setup, make sure promotion is set to HEQRBN, on the 11th rank (that's the default rank for Teams).

In order to play this setup, step one is to go to this post. After that, follow the GIF below, saving as a preset for later use.
