Tonight I found myself watching Nakamura recap his beyond epic win against Esipenko. It's approximately 30mins long and I dozed off for a portion, only to wake up to see Naka's queen forming a triangle with five pawns.

I thought, "might it be fun to have a chess variant where you sit down and play from the middle game on. A random position, or one from a game played by the world's finest!"

For me, I barely make it out of the opening alive usually. Despite that, it could only be a dream to sit down against Fischer, or Tal, Kasparov, Anand, and all of the stars of today.

I know this variant can work because it has existed in American Sports Video Games as "scenario mode" when you take over in the middle of a historic game.

Maybe someday this thought can become a reality.

All the best,

There are many daily chess tournaments that start with you and your opponent already in a set position. You can find one of those, or if you own a club, you can create a live tournament with a set position.
