Auto queening in variants

I have "always promote to queen" turned off in my settings but when I play variants my pawns always auto promote to a queen. This is extremely frustrating, especially when playing giveaway. I have looked and looked but I cant find a variants specific settings tab for this. Im on mobile, and I used to be able to choose what i promoted to just fine, but today suddenly everything is auto queening and i cant stop it
