Your explanations of these games shows a deep understanding. How did you get so good?

I’ve seen the position showing that final combination somewhere before but I can’t recall where.

Yes that’s where I saw it. There’s different challenging positions on the t-shirts they sell.

I’ve played quite a few games of Trice’s Chess (still called by the older, obsolete name Gothic Chess on here) against Ed Trice. You never know when he’s going to hit you with a strategic plan that’s essentially a slow-motion buildup or “blast away” with a lightning bolt tactic.

The fact that both of these very different motifs are possible at just about any stage of the game is testimony to the intricate depths that lurk beneath the surface in this well-designed variant.

Ed also has “pattern recognition” unlike any player I have faced. He can digest critical elements from 8x8 chess, find the 10x8 equivalent theme, extract the neccesary components in part or in whole, and polish up the details and send you something quite unexpected. He attributes this “to his game” and not “himself,” by that he means these types of things exist within the position, we just have to find them. It’s like he was paraphrasing Michealangelo when the great artist said “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

Compare this to Bird vs. Morphy, June 1858
Morphy played 17...Rxf2! (left) 18. Bxf2 Qa3! (right)

You might think, “What do these two completely different positions from completely different games have in common?” Well, Ed found a thematic similarity, then worked out the tactics to confirm:
