Chess with higher power density, more minor pieces, especially leapers. no compound pieces.

As queen is very powerful and exciting it is OP piece, and a compound of rook&bishop. Also there is only one piece that is leaper (excluding step movers). are we able to make variant that would consist of more leapers with interesting abilities, that are unique in a sense, they don't share it's movement with other pieces?
An Alfil (2;2) leaper is an example, bit it's weak.
Would different board be better (on hex board Knight is probably twice as strong as bishop)?
what's the solution? what minor pieces could we add?
10×10 board, with restriction for non-leapers to regular 8×8 board, adding multiple alfils (if 4, than sum of values: 1.5×4=6)? or adding new unique piece, like a leaper, that moves between squares?
