Let's see about this, I can't promise anything. It is difficult to find entirely different ways to move, but I'll try to play somewhat different

What is this?!
This is chu shogi, the dominant form of shogi in Japan from around 1350-1750. There's an official governing body, although all the decisions they make are terrible.
It's one of the first things to look for when moving any piece - whether your lion is safe. With more things to keep track of, the board size does make it easier for everyone to blunder and miss things. Even a very good player can incredulously hang their lion on rare occasion.

I hope you plan to try something new. Doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results doesn't lead to any improvement. It's best not to get caught up with any particulars that you "like", such as an open diagonal, since a player must be ready and willing to play fundamentally different chu shogi against different systems of development.
I have been playing more or less the same way, only because you have been playing more or less the same way, and this system I have been playing is known to simply trump the way you have been playing.
