Note that the engine at chessvariants.com is not a very strong one, but intended as a sparring partner for those who have just digested the rule description of a chess variant there, and want to try it out to get an idea what the game is like. It also has zero knowledge on any particular variant that it plays; for instance, it makes its own guess on the value of the pieces. So it can be configured for a very wide range of variants by just specifying the initial position and how the pieces move and promote. (Plus some info on how to represent them graphically.)

The playing strength can be adjusted by changing the lookehead depth (2.5ply by default), but especially for large variants the thinking time quickly gets unbearably long when you increase the depth. The search is pretty slow. (The AI is written in JavaScript, running in your browser.)

I must say that in some cases the engine shows a good understanding of the position and finds great moves.
