Green Chess Championship

I recently discovered a site called greenchess.net and I think it is pretty cool so I will start a variants tournament using the site.

The tournament will consist of 5 rounds, and all the games of all the rounds will be played on the greenchess website. Each round will consist of a different chess variant not normally found on chess.com. Here is how the rounds will shape up:

  • Round 1: Different Board Size (could be Wide Chess, Far Chess, or Active Chess)

  • Round 2: Fairy Chess Piece (could be Capablanca Chess, Janus Chess, Almost Chess, Chigorin Chess, Superqueen Chess, Nightrider Chess, or Grasshopper Chess)

  • Round 3: Modified Rules (could be Knightmate, Coregal Chess, Dual Chess, Royalty Transfer Chess, Extinction Chess, Cylinder Chess, or Bouncing Chess)

  • Round 4: Different Lattice Boards (could be Balbo’s Chess, Diagonal Oblong Chess, Big Diagonal Chess, Shifted Chess, or Cross Chess)

  • Round 5: Hexagonal Chess (could be Gliński's Chess, McCooey's Chess, Shafran's Chess, Brusky's Chess, or De Vasa's Chess)

Each round has a different theme, but the exact variants I will be using in my rounds will not be determined until the tournament starts. Each round will require paired participants to challenge each other on the site. Each round will consist of 2 games. Each person should play one game as white and one game as black. The games should be set to public so that I can see them. The site does have undos. You can choose if you want to accept an undo or decline an undo. The choice is up to you. Also, please do not write in the “public messages” section of any ongoing games, although you are more than welcome to watch any games at any time.

There is a time control for this event. It is 2 days per move. Since the site does not implement varying time controls, I will enforce them myself. If I see you taking 2 days or longer to play your move, you will receive a warning by me. 3 warnings will result in you automatically forfeiting the tournament. Also, if you do not heed my warning and take 5 days or longer to play your move, you will automatically forfeit, regardless of how many warnings you have.

Signups will take place until March 30th 2026. I would like for there to be at least 8-10 signups, but 4 is enough for this tournament. If fewer than 4 people sign up for this tournament by March 30th, this tournament will be cancelled as there is not enough interest in this event. Once the tournament starts, no one else can sign up.

Transparency is also important for this event, so I need to be able to know what green chess username you have so I can follow your game and issue time warnings when necessary. You need to complete a google form listing your chess.com username and green chess username to sign up for this event. Also, if you wish to not participate in one round, you may issue a one-round bye. This bye is worth 0 points, so it may not be advised.

Yes, I will be playing in this event. My greenchess username is BellinghamGambit. You can find me here: https://greenchess.net/player.php. Yes, I am subject to the same time restrictions as everyone else and can forfeit. For the integrity of this tournament, I will try my best not to.

Reminder: Signups take place until March 30th. Round 1 will thus start on March 31st. My timezone is CST, so this may look a little different depending on where you live.

Note: Because of the low number of responses (5), this might turn out to be a Round Robin tournament. Round Robin is where every person plays each other at least once (in this case twice). Also, each round will start exactly 14 days after the previous one. So, Round 2 will start April 13th, Round 3 will start April 27th, etc. It is OK if you don’t finish your Round 1 games before Round 2 starts. That is expected.

Possible Variations for round 1:

  • Active Chess

  • Wide Chess (10, 11, 12)

  • Far Chess (9, 10, 11, 12)

I will let the spinner with this link:

https://wheelofnames.com/r2n-bmz

Decide what variation gets picked. Further updates (the variant the spinner chose and the pairing) will be provided around 9:00 PM in my time zone. Where I live in Texas, it is 6:46 PM right now, so expect a wait of around 2 hours.

I will spin the wheel right now

We have a winner!!!!

Since there are still only 6 people in this tournament, this will be Round Robin. This is the first of 5 rounds, as the second round starts 14 days from now on April 13th 2026.

Pairings for Round 1:

Player 1 acts as the challenger. They must challenge their opponent on the Green Chess website to 2 games of Wide Chess 12 (one white and one black). The deadline for Player 1 to challenge their opponent is April 3rd 2025.

Player 2 acts as the acceptor. They must accept their opponent’s challenge. The deadline for Player 2 to do this is April 5th 2025.

Quick note - The pairings list chess.com usernames. Here is how they correspond to Green Chess.

@ChessXplainer green chess username is ChessXplainer

@umarafeef2012A green chess username is Umarafeef2012A

@CretaceousCheckmate green chess username is BellinghamGambit

Update:

Round 1 Boards 1 and 3 have been going smoothly so far. In Board 2, I got a message from @umarafeef2012A saying that he has withdrawn from the tournament. Luckily, I have a replacement. His chess.com is @gerymate, and his Green Chess is sportember.

Here are the updated pairings for Round 1. Boards 1 and 3 remain unchanged. In Board 2, I replaced the “Player 1” like I mentioned before.

Note: If you like this forum tournament, I created another one. It is regular chess, but the format follows that of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. I think it is really interesting. If you are interested, just pick a team, and that is how I know you signed up.

I were active on greenchess few years ago but ceased activity there cause of no functional clock. Games can literally go on for days if not weeks.

yeah that kind of why I have the timeout warning system for this tournament

I'd like to add that on chess.com, even with a clock, daily chess games usually go on for weeks if not months. Games with 7+ days per move sometimes go on for years. So if I am correct, you would like an option to play live chess on that website?

#18 I am aware that games can still take days or weeks. The timeout warning system is designed to stop people from delaying the games for as long as possible as it takes 3+ weeks per move for timeouts to occur in the first place.

Yes of course. Correspondence is painfully slow. Few gravitates towards that.
