Very nice variant
INTERVIEW WITH THE CREATOR OF BEYOND CHESS

White to move mate in 1
Black wasn't able to mate because White could always move the mating square away.
Tiles cannot be shifted right back consecutively, so it helps the game progress without stalling. In Beyond Chess, there is always a way!

I learned about this game because of this thread. I find the idea original and appealing.
The board moves on something else, and since that something else must have a name too it's called the rift mat.
However I think that a logically equivalent set of rules can be defined using just a board and a new piece called the Blocker.
So instead of moving an empty square to an adjacent rift, we would be moving a blocker to an adjacent empty square.

Your idea is interesting but it falls under the KISS law
Increasing the number of pieces on the board has been tried several times, as well as creating pieces with new powers. And a new piece like "Blocker", actually an artificial barrier to replace the natural Rifts, would only uselessly go the amount of elements on the board. The simplicity of Beyond Chess playing only with the squares and pieces and pawns is hard to beat. But it's amazing how much you've captured of the essence of this new variant! It took me almost a year to start understanding certain principles and concepts that only occur in Beyond Chess!
Congratulations!

Exactly!
And what would be the next moves and shifts after Qc2?
Remember that in Beyond Chess just shift the right tile to the wrong direction which is also a blunder...
For example, if after Qc2 Black shifts the tile F4 will lose mate in 2 with White's answer Ke6 E4> (or F5v)!
In Beyond Chess there is a high possibility that Stalemate and/or the King will be evading checkmate for several turns (the "Royal Run" in BC jargon)!

♟ In the past, only pieces and pawns were moved in chess… this has changed in BEYOND CHESS, the variant where an empty square on the board can also be shifted after each move.
