I will try again soon ... But please wait for a week or ten days, when I hope to have more time, and right now you have another opponent and I’ll follow those games with interest.

I just remembered that the Progressive Chess app I have on my phone also plays 960 (with Italian rules it seems). Castling is not enabled in 960, but usually you don’t want to castle so that doesn’t matter much. Also on this phone version you cannot set up a specific position, but there is a PC version with extra features that I haven’t tried (you need to have Java installed). I don’t know how strong this program is - I’ve only played quick games with it, and it’s good at finding mates but maybe not so good positionally. See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=si.jsi.vito.progressivechess

Thanks Malcolm! And thanks for the link. I installed this app and in my opinion it is very weak. I didn't know there was a PC version of Progressive Chess. This is a bit sad as I am used to playing chess variants for which there are no chess engines.
Malcolm as soon as you have time to play, write here that you are ready. I will select a position and post it.
Good luck my friend! I am looking forward to the start of our second game.

I'm happy to play a second 960 game now, so please select a position and I'll play White this time.

Since our first game I've played a few semi-serious games with the Progressive Chess app. On medium level (it takes only a few seconds to reply) I played too quickly and was mated on move 6. Then I played two slower games (lasting almost an hour) and won both - the first of these was very close when the app made a tactical mistake, and in the second game it played a weak sequence at move 4 and never recovered. Then I tried the hard level and again it played weakly and I was surprised it let me mate it on move 7. My conclusion at this point is that it will usually beat weak and maybe many average players (or anyone who plays too quickly) but it will struggle against stronger players who are careful and have a good sense of positional play.

In your game with Punchbox (post #40) I spotted a mate at move 6. Have a look, I'm sure you will see it quickly (it's always easier when you know in advance that there's a mate!).

Wait so how does one play this anyways?

Ok Malcolm, I'm ready. Chess 960 position is #033 >>> BNNBQRKR

About post#40. You are absolutely right my friend. There is a checkmate, which I unfortunately overlooked. 6. f5, f4, fg3, g2, Be4, gf=Q# Thank you for bringing this to your attention.
