Martin vs the world analysis thread #3

We can go for a Grünfeld... I personally hate the Nimzo Indian

Grayson1e4e6

I vote g6

Tja_05

Since the probability of one event repeating itself is very low, I think we are somewhat safe in playing this move. Also, there may be an event that favors us in this case.

Chess_Pro2

I vote 3...d5, but I don't think 3...Bg7 would be bad either.

Edit: Oops of course I meant 3...Bg7 would not be bad, 3...g6 can't be played, since it was played on move 2. I changed it now.

aronian22

I vote d5 because we don't want Martin taking the entire center.

USAuPzlBxBob

I vote d5 to bring the vote to 4… not to mention I like the move, Martin is expecting it, and who knows when the first Event will occur… maybe Martin will do that before his next move.

USAuPzlBxBob

Vote Nxd5.  (btw, that is the standard reply… yes?)

Grayson1e4e6

Yeah, I vote that too.

captaintugwash

We're on the Gruenfeld defence, and yeah Nxd5 is the only good reply here.

captaintugwash

Standard from there is 5. e4 Nxc3, but Martin might play 5. Bd2, in which case 5... Bg7, white still has a slight edge but nothing to worry about.

captaintugwash

Can I just confirm one thing? Are we ok using opening databases? Obviously engines are a no-no, but opening books?

USAuPzlBxBob

Yes, literature and data bases are fine.  (I asked the same question in the first game against Martin.)  You can even sit at a board, move pieces, test ideas by trial and error.

captaintugwash

That's what I thought, standard for correspondence chess. It won't be long before I'm out of my comfort zone in this opening.

Chess_Pro2

I didn't even have time to vote this time, but I would have voted for 4...Nxd5 of course. It was the only good move.

dax00

He played e4.

I vote to start an event

USAuPzlBxBob

I vote to start an event, too.
(was thinking the same thing before checking this thread's Alert)

captaintugwash

There is risk associated with starting an event now, because our next move is, in theory at least, highly predictable. We certainly have to move our knight, and if we're sticking with book, then Nxc3 is pretty much the only good move here. Of course, much depends on the event.

Grayson1e4e6

Yeah, I vote Nxc3

USAuPzlBxBob

Sounds good to me, so vote… Nxc3.

cap, I also thought of the risk, even went to the Events page to see what they're like, but they're so myriad, I quickly got sidetracked with interests other than chess.

I also think Martin is expecting us to start an Event before our next move following our current move, once things have normalized after his pawn captures back.

Chess_Pro2

I vote 5...Nxc3.

I skimmed through the knight modifier events quickly, but I didn't see any event that would win material for us in this position. Maybe the Swapping Knights event (Event #122) would be slightly useful for us in this position, since we could swap the knight on d5 with the pawn on c7 to get a stronger center. But that would have less than 1% chance of happening so I don't think it's worth starting an event just for that.

And none of the other knight modifier events seemed particularly useful to us right away (or they would help both players equally).
