Well, it's just a variant. Her game, her rules.
I love it! I love the idea for starters definitely, especially the diamond formation. I think Punchbot makes a couple points that can affect the game strategically but this is a great attempt. The bishops are a thing, but maybe connected bishops can make a new interesting kind of game? My main concern would be the idea of the queen eyeing up the opponents king on the long diagonal.
I hope you don't mind, I like you variation but I share punchbots concerns a little, but rather than complain I made this:
