NUCLEAR CHESS

Standard chess rules with the addition of Rooks doubling as Nuclear Missiles (or Nooks). Rooks move as Rooks, until they are moved or 'launched' as a Nuclear Missile, according to the following rules:

1. Rooks may not move as Nuclear Missiles until a major piece (Rook, Knight, Bishop or Queen) of either colour has been captured.
2. A Nuclear Missile may only be launched by a player on their own turn.
3. A Nuclear Missile may not be launched if it is under attack.
4. Launching a Nuclear Missile counts as a move.
5. A Nuclear Missile moves to any square, in any combination of horizontal, vertical or diagonal moves, jumping over any intervening pieces, within a range of five squares.
6. All pieces of either colour, on the nine squares surrounding a square moved to by a Nuclear Missile together with the square itself, are removed from the game together with the Nuclear Missile. Kings are immune to Nuclear Missiles and remain on the board.

Sub-variants:

A: Strategic Nuclear Chess

Only one Rook doubles as a Nuclear Missile, chosen in secret by each player. This Rook should be secretly marked on the base with a dot, and only revealed when launched as per the standard rules for Nuclear Chess. Additionally:

1. If a Nuclear Missile is hit by a Nuclear Missile, it may be 'launched' in retaliation before being removed, unless it was already under attack prior to being hit. The retaliating player retains the next move.
2. The base of a Rook or Nuclear Missile captured during conventional play is not revealed to the capturing player.

B: Global Thermonuclear Chess

A Nuclear Missile has unlimited range, and may move to any square on the board.
