Not sure what you mean by 'obscure'. If you want a variant that is similar to FIDE, but which not many people play, you could try 'Contageous Queen'. The setup and rules are exactly like orthodox Chess, except that Pawns cannot promote to Queen on reaching the last rank, but any piece other than King that captures a Queen will promote to Queen.

This is by no means original. Surely, someone has come up with this idea before. But my variant idea is where you play with the board flipped. Or maybe even from the side!
