Shatranj / Medieval chess
fide chess is a descendent of chaturanga...
Chinese Chess is closer to Chaturanga than FIDE chess.
Bishops are still elephants, moves 2 squares diagonally.
Queen is still vizier, moves 1 square diagonally.
No 2 steps pawns, and no en passant.
No castling.
No pawn promotion.
No stalemate.
The names and moves are the same. Chariot, Elephant, Vizier.
I learned the word "atavus" = common ancestor, from the TV show Earth: Final Conflict.
There is no need to look for the "atavus", the common ancestor. The 2 descendants have surpassed their common progenitor.
That is why the common ancestor died.
Something else from form India.
The common ancestor of martial arts and dance is Yoga.
Yoga still exists. It has not died, like Chaturanga.
Both martial artists and dancers practice Yoga.
Yoga is a living common ancestor.
@batgirl.
Who needs batgirl, when the Bro-fessor (of bro-science) is here.
Something else from India.
The common ancestor of martial arts and dance is Yoga.e
Sheeva in Mortal Kombat is a descendant of . . . Shiva.
The Temple of Light in the movie Mortal Kombat is a Buddhist temple.
That's an example of Bro-science in action.
@camobishop
This is actually the plot of the movie Underworld. The Lycans were trying to find a living descendant of the common ancestor of the Lycans and the Vampires.
Their history is told orally in a story, that the Vampire leader dismisses as not based in fact.
It is actually a very good movie about lineages.
Edit:
I am actually using "Bro-science" to track down the 3rd son of Corvinus!
Follow the path of Buddhism.
Thailand.
Thai Chess is the living descendant closest to Chaturanga!
Bro-science actually works!

2nd Edit.
Hmm. The pawn formation in Thai Chess is 1 step advanced. In Chinese Chess, it's 2 steps advanced. Hmm. In FIDE Chess, pawns can move 2 steps on the first move.
Hmm.
Thai Chess is closer to Chaturanga. It makes sense, the pawns in Chinese Chess is another advancement of the pawn. I'm guessing it is later than Thai Chess, by pawn formation (not counting other rules).
3rd edit.
Looking at a map. Burma is between India and Thailand. Burma also borders China.
What do you know?
The infantry line is moved up half 1 step and half 2 steps!
Like it is going on its way to China, to the 2 steps infantry advance!
We can see the intermediary stages!

Bro-science working.
I'm having a hard time finding resources or players of the older version of chess (a.k.a. shatranj, Arab chess, Persian chess, Ancient chess, etc.).
If anyone has any resources concerning the game or would like to play a correspondence game with algebraic notation, let me know!
Shatranj is regularly played on the Scheming Mind correspondence chess site. Anyone can join this recently started tournament (and yes, algebraic notation is used):

Makruk (with similarities to Shatranj) is also played sometimes.

I just figured out the cognates of "Maruk".

This is actually the plot of the movie Underworld.
The Chaturanga recipe was passed on to 3 students.
One added extra curry. (FIDE Chess amplified the movement of the pieces).
One substituted curry with MSG. (Chinese Chess).
One substituted curry with hot peppers (Thai Chess).
And nobody knows for sure what the original Colonel Sanders' secret recipe was exactly.
See? There go you. The oral history of chess in a story.

I'm looking at the descendants.
There may have been 2 original Colonel Sanders' secret recipes.
The key piece is the "elephant".
We know one version of Chaturanga that the Elephant moves 2 squares diagonally. The same in Chinese Chess.
But in Thai Chess, the "elephant" moves 1 square diagonally and 1 square forward.
The same in Shogi, Japanese Chess, the Game of the Shogun:
The Silver General moves like the "elephant" in Thai Chess.
But, Shogi also has a Bishop that moves like the modern Bishop, which we know is the descendant of the 2 squares diagonally Elephant.
The Shogi recipe has both versions of the "Elephants".
The one with the wasabi sauce contains both of the original Colonel Sanders' secret recipes.

The common rules are the same.
As Chaturanga is the common ancestor of Western Chess and Chinese Chess.
I am very precise with my language.

I don't forget anything.

Chinese Chess has more in common with Chaturanga than Western Chess.
They did not add extra curry, (Amplify the pieces).
Bishop - amplified to 10.
Queen - amplified to 11.
2 steps pawn - amplified.
pawn promotion - amplified to 11
castling - amplified to 11
Add up all the amplifications (or is it multiply?) and that is a whole lot more curry.
