yeah sadly chesscom decided to foolishly add checkmate to this variant when there really isnt a need to and it leads to problems like this.

Black actually wins. After a random move like b5, Black can freeze your king and reveal an attack on it too. Whatever move you play you lose your king.
Why is this check mate? I should be able to freeze back, moving a pawn on the other side of the board. From the description: "Frozen pieces do not check or checkmate kings."
