2. Bg3??

Is that drop legal man?

drop64

The focus of this topic is drops.

If you stand back when looking at the previous topic you will see that I was trying to simplify the rules for pawns for the side board and for the players first two ranks on the game board.

This attempt however to make the pawn rules exactly the same for the side board + 2 game board ranks has one side affect that I am not happy with.

drop64

I am changing the terminology that was used in the previous topic and this results in one change to the rules for pawns.

Before diving into the detail the important thing to remember is that the only way to get a unit or pawn onto the game board is with a drop.

The following examples show the change in terminology and then a specific example will show the affect of the rule change.

1. d1  d8

These are now pawn drops.

In the previous topic these were pawn steps.

1. e2  e7

These are now pawn drops.

In the previous topic these were pawn jumps, also called double steps.

1. Ke1  Ke8

These are double drops: unit drop + pawn drop.

2. Ba2  Bg8??

This is the effect of the rule change.

In the previous topic 3. Bxg8  hxg8 would be legal.

But now black can not capture the white bishop with the pawn on the side board.

The pawns on a side board do not defend squares on a players 1st rank.

Protection from capture on the game board must be limited as much as possible.

Only the pawns on a players 1st rank can not be captured when the attacking player is not yet fully deployed.

King transfers are an optional second drop for the kings.

The game queue is random and the kings could be: very early, somewhere in the middle or very late.

The starting position of the pawns is also random and this affects building king shelters and planning rapid pawn breaks or pawn storms.

The heavy units, the queens and rooks, could also be very late in the game queue with deployment to the game board being delayed.

King transfers provide a degree of flexibility on the game board to keep the players thinking about the final positions of the kings.
