What happened to the variants screen? it used to have a bunch of variants that you can't access anymore (specifically atomic). I really only use chess com for the variants so I was very sad with this change.
Atomic is still there and shows up under the Most Popular tab for sure:

Try clearing your browser cache. I'm seeing it in and out of beta (though that latter doesn't matter for the Variants server).
Click the Dice icon instead of the 4PC one at the top left. You're filtering to 4 player types only
Why do i have to search to find The Hive and Why does Villagers Chess II have #removecandidate beside the description, also has anyone noticed Sergeant Laboratory and Surprise Attack cannot be found anymore
I had the same thing happen to me, I don't know if I accidentally clicked it, or if chess,com has a dark pattern that defaults away from variants to 4p chess, but at the top there's an icon with 4 arrows pointing at each other, and another icon with a green cube, make sure the green cube is selected. As a variants enthusiast, I hope this helps others.
It strikes me as peculiar that with a community as large as chess.com, the variant server doesn't get much action. One would think it would be packed with folks playing these variant games like crazy, but it really isn't, not even close 🙁
Adding those 'fairy pieces' to chess, while interesting, doesn't get its due. I agree, there are so many possibilities, but we stick to the same old rules. It's like staying put in your own backyard, say, New York or London, and never venturing out.

I think a variant with all the fairy pieces that we have good empirical value data on, and using a points system to build your army, would be interesting, but then maybe everyone would just pick 3 knights instead of a queen, might have to tweak the values a little.
When they moved the variants, they got rid of the achievements. Sigh.
What is the outlook for chess variants long term, I wonder will it only be 960 for the near future or does anyone think that in a decade or a decade and a half people might want to venture into completely new waters, beyond the scope of full chess aka 960.
