Yes, you're probably thinking of atomic. There are a couple lesser known variants that have pieces blowing up such as Beruit Chess, but you're most likely not thinking of one of these variants.

The one unfortunate thing about Atomic Chess is that white always starts with an advantage. Black usually only wins if white blunders or makes too many mistakes.
also the king can ignore check by another king as kings cant capture
