Will playing variants help with ranking up?

That's more of a question towards you instead of an article I'm just a variant enjoyer, I play regularly with my cousin and thought that it might help me with ranking up on blitz, but so far I've just got back to 950, which is my ATH on all my profiles, and I really can't get past it. So should I abandon variants or is it okay?

Most variants have different though processes and patterns and are unlikely to help with standard Chess ability.

My experience is actually the exact opposite: after becoming "addicted" to atomic chess and making it to 1950 (I'm around 1000 in "normal" chess), I realize I now have totally lost my intuition for the standard game! happy After playing only atomic for a month, I now would need a "detox" period to be able to play regular chess again properly! :-D Anyone else with the same experience?
