Both players should have an option other than making an immediate move to stop abort timer, especially with 960, where players need a minute to assess the board. It's very easy to make an opening blunder giving bishops & queens access to easy front row pawns, which lead into free pieces in the back row.
Something as simple as both sides checking (ready) box before any timers start would work.
