Allpowerful Queen - New Chess
One of the things that make Chess such a good game is that no piece is completely invulnerable against all others. All pieces have 'blind directions' in which they cannot defend against attacks. The Amazon breaks that.
Indeed, the Knight fills in the gaps in the 'second ring'. It might be interesting to know that inspired by this, George Duke designed a piece (called Falcon) that would fill in the gaps in the third ring, the (1,3) and (2,3) displacements.
Pieces that can jump there directly are way to strong, as they can immediately threaten smothered mates, and fork pieces on the back-rank before you have time to develop. To prevent that, the Falcon does not reach these destinations in a single, unblockable leap like the Knight uses to reach its (1,2) destinations. Instead it must 'walk' there, by taking 3 King steps. This can be done in 3 paths, and if a square on that path is blocked, that path cannot be used. So the Falcon can be blocked, e.g. by a solid rank of Pawns, but ifone of the 3 paths is clear, it can reach the square at the end of it. Because it has the choiceout of 3 paths, it is quite adept at sneaking through Pawn chains.
Personally I think 'Snake' would have been a better name for this piece, because it seems to slither to its destination.
So this past week, I was teaching my child Chess, and the way the pieces move, and he ask me why the Queen can not move like a Knight. It can do everything else....
Aside from the "because that's the way it is answer" I replie; I got to thinking....Why not?
Granted this will not change the majority of games, but what would happen to our beloved game if we spliced the queens DNA and gave her the power to move as a Knight.
All other rules of chess would continue as per the norm.
(Note: If this has varient has be been addressed already, my apologies, I did not read through several thousand topics to check. No disrespect intended)
