BRC/Chess1920

An idea which may have been published before, but if so then I haven't seen it:

BRC = BananaBoatCaptian's Random Chess = Chess1920

Chess1920 is a variant of Western Chess much like Chess960.

The initial position for a game of Chess1920 is first created according to the rules of Chess960.  Then, a coin is tossed.  If the coin shows heads, then the set-up process is done.  If the coin shows tails, then the black pieces are taken off the board and repositioned to be the left/right reversal of the white pieces.

It's simple, fair, and has twice the variety as does Chess960.

I'd rather call it evertVB chess :)

Just kidding, but after finding a proper name we could play a game, just post the diagrams in this topic as we move

I found an earlier reference to Chess1920:

What would teh castling rules be, in a setup where black was mirrored? Would the King still end up on g8 after h-side castling, or would that now be f8? If not the latter, the position would not be truly symmetric. Which could actually lead to an imbalance (e.g. if the direction in which you can castle most easily due to piece placement would land your King on the unsafer square as it does for the other side.)

Balance is not gauranteed for the case where both colors castle on the same flank.  However, there is a much better balance for the case where castling occurs on un-same flanks.

HGMuller

Does that mean f8 or g8 ????

Think yin-yang rotation group symmetry.

@HGMuller good point, in order to make it symmetrical i agree with f8
